A steering problem caused a cruise ship to roll abruptly to the left Tuesday, injuring some passengers and terrifying many, Coast Guard officials and passengers said. The Crown Princess, which can accommodate 3,000 passengers, had just departed Port Canaveral, Fla., en route to New York when it listed badly to its port side, said Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer James Judge.

Storm forms off N.C. coast

Tropical Storm Beryl, the second named storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season, formed off the North Carolina coast Tuesday, and a tropical storm watch was issued for the eastern part of the state. The National Hurricane Center said top winds were about 40 mph. The storm is expected to make its closest approach to North Carolina on Wednesday.

Miner killed in collapse

A miner was killed Tuesday when the hillside along a surface mine in Hindman, Ky., collapsed on him as he operated a drill, a state official said. The mine has been cited 10 times, most recently in June for equipment violations and allowing loose, hazardous material to accumulate. The death was the 35th mining fatality in the U.S. this year.

Student’s killer confesses

A man convicted of killing an Emory University student in 1994 told authorities how he raped her, strangled her, burned her body and disposed of her ashes. Colvin Hinton invited police, the victim’s father and others to a prison in Reidsville, Ga., to hear his two-hour confession Monday to the murder of Shannon Melendi.

Thanks to applesauce, this robber was toast

A customer at a Philadelphia grocery tackled an armed robber Sunday and beat him with a can of applesauce when he refused to drop his gun, police said Tuesday. The suspect shot himself in the head during the struggle, and passed out after the 66-year-old customer administered four blows to the head with the applesauce.
