Sometimes it takes just a minute to redefine yourself to yourself. Example: high school gym. The coach is putting you through outdoor fitness evaluations. One is the “ball throw.” Each guy throws a softball, and someone measures the distance. You figure you’ll get an average score; you’re a pretty average guy. The class jocks whipped the ball 50, 60 yards. You have no expectations, but you give it a fling.
Amazingly, your throw soars into a high arc, and when it passes the point where the farthest shots have hit, it’s still rising. Your ball lands so far away that the kid with the measuring tape just gapes. The coach gapes. You feel fine, but you’re surprised that you had such a throw in you. Gives you something good to think back on as you go through life. Must be the way a detective feels, knowing he’s packing a gun under his jacket.
