My 86-year-old bachelor twin brother, Charles, and I were drafted and served together in World War II. We both enjoyed reading “On behalf of twins everywhere” (Commentary, July 26).
While stationed in Iceland in 1941, we were often on guard duty together. Here is one story: At 4 p.m. the guard mount officer announces: “Charles Goodrich, I promote you to Cpl. Goodrich; here are two chevrons.”
(Pause)
“Arthur Goodrich, I promote you to private first class; here is one chevron.”
(Pause).
Officer yells: “Any questions?”
Loud voice yells: “Now we can tell them twins apart.”
Spontaneous laughter.
We wound up serving in Gen. George Patton’s 3rd Army 5th infantry division, 50th field artillery.
