Curt Schilling gave up nine doubles and a homer, failing to become the first 15-game winner in the majors as the Red Sox suffered a three-game sweep and lost five in a row for the first time since 2004. The 10 extra-base hits ties the AL record. The major-league mark is 16.

Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo, so frustrated by a seven-week slump that he got his shoulder-length hair braided into cornrows two days earlier, allowed three Cardinals homers and remained winless since June 19. He’s 0-5 in his last 10 starts with a 5.29 ERA.

Angels starter Ervin Santana was helped from the field by trainers after being hit in the left leg by a line drive off the bat of Cleveland’s Jason Michaels. Santana suffered a bruised knee. Los Angeles already is without injured 2005 Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon.
