South suburban residents were treated to a spectacular sunset Saturday when crepuscular rays (also called twilight rays) produced alternating dark and light bands that seem to diverge in fanlike fashion from the setting sun. A cloud mass near Rockford blocked some of the setting sun’s rays causing the shadowed dark bands, while atmospheric dust and haze scattered the unshadowed light toward our eyes, producing the reddish-orange light bands.
