LETTER TO LATINOS: The California attorney general is investigating letters sent to some Hispanics claiming it is a crime for immigrants to vote and telling them they could be jailed or deported if they go to the polls next month. In fact, immigrants who become naturalized citizens can legally vote.
FOLEY REMINDER: The State Department has sent an e-mail to U.S. citizens in Iraq alerting them to the resignation of Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.), who quit because of the congressional page scandal. The message reminded them that a vote for Foley is actually a vote for his GOP replacement, state Rep. Joe Negron. An aide to Negron’s Democratic foe, Tim Mahoney, denounced the e-mail as a Republican ploy.
POT ON THE BALLOT: If a measure passes Nov. 7, Nevada would be the first state to allow people age 21 or over to possess up to an ounce of marijuana, which could be purchased at government-regulated shops.
A&E: In New Jersey, it’s Saxton vs. Sexton. Republican Rep. Jim Saxton is being challenged by Democrat Rich Sexton. The Republicans say Democrats hope to confuse voters by running a candidate with a name similar to the incumbent’s. Sexton responds: “The guy has been in Congress 22 years and he thinks people are going to forget his name?”
PAYING THE LAWYERS: Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-Calif.) faces such a little-known opponent that he hasn’t even opened a campaign office. But he has used more than $750,000 from his campaign fund for defense lawyers as federal investigators examine Lewis’ ties with lobbyists.
SEED MONEY: New York Gov. George Pataki, his eye on a 2008 presidential run, has spread campaign cash around to Republicans in Michigan and other key states, including $42,000 to help state Senate candidates in New Hampshire, according to disclosure reports.
