Beatrice Bea A. Schubert, 79 years old, of Galena, died peacefully on Oct. 25, 2006 after a long battle with cancer. A Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, 2006 at the FurlongFuneral Chapelin Galena, where friends may call after 3 p.m. She was born on Sept. 21, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Arthur and Florence, nee Porter, Alfke. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA in May of 1948. She was united in marriage to Ken Schubert, the love of her life on Jan. 29, 1949 in Brooklyn and he survives. Bea and Ken lived all over the East Coast before settling in Wheaton, IL in 1971. During her years in Wheaton, she worked at the College of DuPage (C.O.D.) in Glen Ellyn, IL and completed her Masters in Education at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. She retired from (C.O.D.) as Director of Community Education. After retirement, she continued her lifelong commitment to Girl Scouts by serving as the President of the Board of the Girl Scouts of DuPage County. Bea and Ken took up permanent residence at what had been their vacation home in Galena, IL in 1996. From that point forward, Bea and Ken enjoyed their remaining years together by traveling extensively to all seven continents and by spending much time with their family. Bea will be remembered as a woman who always expected the best of herself and those around her, and who loved life and lived it to its fullest. Her generosity of spirit is reflected in the scholarship that she established at Wellesley College, which provides financial aid to deserving students. She will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched. She is survived by her husband; her four children, Karen (Robert) Dalton, Barbara (Daniel) Schubert-MacDonald, Christina Schubert and Eric (Dawn) Schubert; her eight grandchildren, Amy Dalton, Ellen Polamero, Andrew Snarski, Claire Snarski, Helen Snarski, Helen Snarski, David Schubert, Ben Schubert and Thomas Schubert; two great-grandchildren, Adam and Rebecca Snarski; and by one sister, Irene (William) Norwood. She was preceded in death by her parents. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the University of Iowa Foundation, Holden Comprehensive Center, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, IA 52244-4550.
