When Sean Connery slipped into James Bond’s mod suit in 1962’s “Dr. No,” Agent 007 defined a new kind of masculinity–hard, fast and hunky.
Over the years, Bond changed as other actors took on the role–George Lazenby’s regretful husband, Roger Moore’s smirking dandy, Timothy Dalton’s conflicted brooder, Pierce Brosnan’s sarcastic playboy.
Here’s a look at what the new Bond, Daniel Craig, is keeping–and tossing–from previous Bond films.
Gadgets
Bond wins his signature Aston Martin sports car in a poker game, but the big special effects and high-tech gizmos that were front-and-center in the Moore and Brosnan films are gone.
Martini
Bond does imbibe in his signature drink, but don’t expect the famous line when a bartender asks if he wants his martini shaken or stirred. “Do I look like I give a damn?” Craig’s Bond says.
Villains
The terrorist financier Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) holds his own against any past villains and says the film’s most quotable line: “I don’t believe in God, but in a reasonable rate of return.”
Body
Craig is a buffer Bond than any of the previous actors, even the athletic Lazenby. “There’s no point in my climbing 150 feet in the air and hanging off something, if I then took my shirt off and I had big beer belly.”
Babes
Unlike in past films, beautiful treasury official Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) is sent to SUPERVISE Bond. But the ladies’ man ends up scoring.
