Here’s an idea for the Democratic Congress, Illinois Democrats or both. To wean Americans from their addiction to oil, impose a substantial gas tax and offer an offsetting credit against the income tax. The tax would cut the profits of our enemies in Iran, Venezuela and elsewhere and impact favorably on global warming. The credit makes it equitable for the lower and middle classes, makes it largely revenue-neutral and could be phased out or eliminated for the wealthiest Americans.
Net proceeds could be used to incent sustainable energy, deficit reductions or funding for health care or other Democratic initiatives.
