You know the star-making machinery is humming when word goes out on the wires that Sen. Barack Obama, the Illinois senator near a decision on a presidential campaign, was playing golf at an Oahu golf course in his native state of Hawaii, where he is mulling the biggest political decision of his life with his family.

Honolulu television station KITV reported that “Obama visited the Olomana Golf Links in Waimanalo for at least the second time in four days.” And oh yes, he wore a gray polo shirt, white shorts, sunglasses and a white baseball hat – notes the Google News relay of the Associated Press dispatch. Obama, born in Hawaii, graduated from Honolulu’s private Punahou School in 1979.

His sister has told the Associated Press that Obama will decide about his candidacy during his island stay. That was the first wire report out of Hawaii this week, where Obama is spending the holiday with his family at an Oahu hotel and where sister Maya Soetoro says a political decision is imminent.

Obama’s immediate plans are to spend a lot of time with his grandmother, with the senator due back in Washington the first week in January. Obama has scheduled no public events or interviews on his vacation.

He plans to play golf and basketball with “old buddies” and enjoy the ocean, the AP notes.
