Maggie Mocchi might have forgotten to bring her jersey to Simeon on Saturday, but she did not forget how to win.
Neither did twin sister Allison Mocchi, Rachel Buchek and the rest of Buffalo Grove’s team in a 65-54 victory over No. 3 Young in the City-Suburban Shootout.
Maggie Mocchi normally wears No. 24. She had to borrow Brittany Abrahams’ No. 40.
That didn’t matter as Mocchi finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals as the fourth-ranked Bison prevented a city sweep.
“I owe a lot to her right now,” Mocchi said of Abrahams. “We realized how bad we wanted this. We saw . . . they were ranked ahead of us and that drove me to want to beat them so bad.”
Young (12-2) led 19-14 after the first quarter, but Buffalo Grove (18-1) dominated the second quarter 23-6. Three-pointers by Buchek and freshman Heather Nesbit fueled a 12-0 run.
All five Bison starters remained in the game until Ellen Ayoub fouled out with 2 minutes 18 seconds left. Buchek, given the job of bringing up the ball against Young’s outstanding D’Frantz Smart, managed 13 points and six rebounds. Allison Mocchi scored 16 points and Nesbit 13.
Kiara Conner had 17 points and Krissy Harper 12 for the Dolphins.
Zhaque’ Gray scored 26 points in leading No. 15 Hope to a 68-64 victory over Trinity. Hope (14-4) lost twice in the recent State Farm Classic in Bloomington, but Gray said, “we made up for that.”
With Hope leading 60-59, Gray went to the free-throw line after what No. 18 Trinity (14-5) and its fans thought was a questionable call. She hit both shots, then a technical was called on the Blazers’ bench. Gray again connected twice for a 64-59 lead.
Ashley Brown (10 rebounds) added 15 points and Myreesha Irby 12 for the Eagles. Monica Albano and Marche Smith each had 15 points for Trinity.
No. 10 Marshall rolled to a 25-point halftime lead over Benet (8-11) en route to a 59-36 victory. Adrienne Godbold had 17 points and Sharena Atkinson 15 for the Commandos (13-2). Annie Doyle’s 19 led the Redwings, whose six points in a half was an all-time school low.
Von Steuben (11-5) came up with a 47-40 victory over Evanston behind freshman Laterria Taylor’s 15 points. Darcell Retreage of Evanston (8-10) hit five three-pointers for her 15 points.
