Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

When he was a novice coach working with Al Golden at Virginia, Chicago native Corwin Brown “didn’t just want to be told where [players were] to line up,” said Golden, now at Temple. “He wanted to know why. That’s what made the transition [from playing to coaching] a lot easier.”

Brown, a Julian High School graduate, took another step up the coaching ladder Friday when he was introduced officially as Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator. He had been on the New York Jets’ staff.

“As a player I knew this is something that I wanted to do,” Brown said, “so I tried to prepare myself in such a manner.”

Ron Powlus, a former Irish quarterback and the team’s director of personnel development, was introduced as the team’s quarterbacks coach.

“[Defensive coordinator] Rick Minter and [quarterbacks coach] Peter Vaas’ contracts have not been renewed,” Irish coach Charlie Weis said.

Quinn out of Senior Bowl

Irish quarterback Brady Quinn will sit out the Senior Bowl with a minor knee injury.

Quinn will travel to Mobile, Ala., for the Jan. 27 game, Senior Bowl spokesman Vic Knight told the Press-Register of Mobile. Knight said he didn’t know which knee was injured. Quinn was examined at orthopedist James Andrews’ office in Birmingham, Knight said, and was advised not to play.
