Pay day

After losing a hockey bet with Stephen Colbert, John Gray, the mayor of Oshawa, Ontario, now must pay up–by declaring his own birthday, March 20, to be “Stephen Colbert Day” in his city. Colbert has been rooting for the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit after finding out the Michigan team had named its mascot Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle as a tribute to him. The Spirit beat Gray’s hometown Oshawa Generals.

Kobe ‘shocked’ by suspension

The NBA suspended Kobe Bryant without pay for Tuesday’s game against the Knicks for striking San Antonio’s Manu Ginobili in the face–Bryant says unintentionally–on Sunday. The league denied the Lakers star’s request for an “immediate hearing” to appeal the decision. “I’m surprised,” Bryant said of the suspension ruling. “Shocked by it, actually.”

Coach Mike?

Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary has been a motivational speaker, written four books and co-founded a company that provides leadership training since his playing career ended. On Tuesday, he made his pitch to be head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Singletary was the eighth–and most likely last–candidate to be interviewed by Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones about replacing retired coach Bill Parcells. “I thought it went pretty well,” Singletary said. “I must admit that we were at the [Senior Bowl], and we were coaching, and I was listening to the process and did not know if I would get a call or not. But when I did, I was very pleased and not really surprised.”
