Trustees recently approved close to 50 changes to Glen Ellyn’s zoning code, as part of an update to the village’s regulations for construction and property use.

The updates include clarifying the amount of time that residents may have portable storage units on their property. The change calls for a maximum of 30 days in any calendar year, compelling builders or those making substantial alterations to move utility wires underground.

It also requires the increasingly popular, rubber-matted “sport courts” to be located a certain distance from a homeowner’s property line, said Building and Zoning Official Dale Wilson.

Other changes involve shortening the process for businesses that want to install outdoor seating. Previously, restaurants and cafes were required to go through a cumbersome, three-month special-use permit approval process. Now, if a business meets certain minimum conditions, village staff can authorize it without any zoning approval.

The changes take effect March 1.
