Beth Botts gardens on the north side of an apartment building in the western ‘burbs, where she struggles with deep shade, clay soil, aggressive ground covers, old shrubs, powdery mildew, hail and rabbits. Raised by an organic gardener on the South Side, she spent more than 25 years as an editor before becoming a Tribune garden writer. She also is a Master Gardener.
