Rush 54, Soul 43
He might feel sore again Tuesday, but Rush coach Mike Hohensee didn’t need any pain relief Monday night as he watched his team rally from a fourth-quarter deficit on the way to its seventh straight victory.
Hohensee, still recovering after being struck by a car Friday in Streamwood, called Monday’s game from a skybox at Allstate Arena as the Rush posted a 54-43 victory over Philadelphia.
Linebacker John Moyer delivered considerable discomfort to the visiting Soul when he made the play of the game with 3 minutes 11 seconds to play.
The Rush veteran tipped a pass from quarterback Juston Wood, alertly pulled it in after the ball had ricocheted off teammate Curtis Eason’s helmet and returned it 39 yards for the go-ahead score at 47-43.
Wide receiver Bobby Sippio added an insurance TD with 32 seconds to play when he hauled in a 33-yard pass from quarterback Matt D’Orazio.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Soul (4-4).
“It’s game day,” said Hohensee, whose neck was in a brace and whose left arm was in a sling.
“There’s no other place I want to be. My mind’s clear. I was here for the first two days of preparation, so I know exactly what’s going on, and I know what the game plan is.
“And I wanted [the players] to know I was OK. I didn’t want to go another day without them seeing me and wondering.”
The Rush (7-1) quickly got on the board after Moyer recovered a Soul fumble at the Philadelphia 7 on the game’s opening offensive play.
Three plays later, D’Orazio scored from inside the 2-yard line.
The Soul built a 34-27 halftime lead behind Wood’s five TD passes. [ tribune ]
