“MONSTER HOUSE”

***

8 p.m., STARZ

A tasty surprise, not for younger kids, but a deft mixture of fright and wit for everyone else. Something’s weird about the house across the street, and a plucky young kid tests his nerve and resolve in finding out the story. The animation and the script feel fresher than usual, which is saying something, considering how much of the usual we normally get in feature animation.

“AMORES PERROS”

****

10:05 p.m., IFC

This ferociously exciting movie by Mexico’s Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (“Babel”) won more festival awards than any other 2000 film. The most scorchingly brilliant look at Mexico City street life since Luis Bunuel’s “Los Olvidados,” it’s a stunning, three-part fresco of the city high and low, a bravura display that holds you spellbound. (Spanish, with English subtitles.)
