Jeff Gordon’s rolled to his third straight NASCAR Nextel Cup pole Friday, and former series champion Dale Jarrett was among those headed home as Toyota teams again struggled to compete in Richmond, Va.
Gordon, a four-time series champion, will start on the pole for the fourth consecutive week and for the fifth time in six races. He has also won two races in a row and has opened a 203-point lead over second-place Jeff Burton.
Gordon won the pole at 126.251 m.p.h. in a Chevrolet. This race is for NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow design, and Gordon in the three COT races so far has finished third, second and first.
“No doubt about it, things feel as good as they’ve ever felt in any run we’ve ever had,” Gordon said.
