For this week’s cover story on how PETA went mainstream, we faced a question: How to illustrate a story about an issue where there was no central figure? The result was the charming photograph that graces the cover of this week’s Magazine.

It was photographed by Katrina Wittkamp, a former photography editor at the Magazine who left the newspaper to forge a free-lance career–which she has done with her usual panache.

Katrina may not work with us on a daily basis anymore, but this doesn’t stop us from taking pride in her accomplishments.

“I admire Kat tremendously,” says her former colleague, Rick Kogan, “not only for having the courage to leave the comfort of a steady job at the Tribune but for her ability to grow as an artist while deftly balancing the responsibilities and demands of being a wife and mother.”
