Ex-White Sox farmhand Chris Young crushed a game-winning homer as the Diamondbacks beat the Giants 4-3 in 10 innings. Young, who was acquired in the Javier Vazquez trade in Dec. 2005, hammered an 0-1 pitch from Kevin Correia over the wall in center.
It was bittersweet day for Braves journeyman Buddy Carlyle, who tossed a one-hitter over seven innings to earn his second major-league win, 3-1 over the Marlins in the opener of a doubleheader. His reward? A trip to Triple-A Richmond. His first win came with the Padres in 1999.
The Padres’ trio of Chris Young, Scott Linebrink and Trevor Hoffman combined for a five-hitter as they overtook the Dodgers for first in the NL West with a 1-0 win over Los Angeles. Hoffman earned his 499th career save, just one away from being the first to 500.

The Devil Rays’ bullpen imploded in the ninth, allowing six runs, including a bases-loaded walk to Aaron Hill to cap a 12-11 loss to the Blue Jays. Four relievers gave up four hits and five walks during the collapse, which cost Andy Sonnanstine a win in his debut.
Mike Bacsik had his first bad start in four tries in a 7-6 loss to the Pirates as the Nationals fell to 2-5 on their homestand. Bacsik gave up six runs, six hits and walked five over 4 1/3 innings. The Nationals allowed seven runs or more for the third straight game.
The Tigers’ Nate Robertson failed to retire a batter as he gave up six runs on four hits and two walks in the first inning of a 7-4 loss to the Rangers. Clemente High graduate Victor Diaz contributed to the woes with a grand slam.
