Who: DJ Colette, 32. A native Chicagoan who now lives in L.A., Colette has been spinning for 12 years. Colette is part of the much-loved SuperJane crew, the all-women DJ collective that also includes Dayhota, Heather and Lady D.
Sound: She’s known for adding her own live vocals as she spins an energizing blend of house music styles, from deep to tracky.
Where: Smart Bar, where she recently celebrated the sixth year of her monthly residency.
Need-to-know: Colette has a new album, “Push,” coming out in August on San Francisco?s Om Records label. “I collaborated with such amazing producers and songwriters on this project: Home and Garden, Santiago and Bushido, Drew K, Chuck Love, Fab, Lucy Woodward,’ she says. “I’m going to be touring with a live band for the first time … I’m equally excited and nervous about that!”
Hot tracks: “One of the most memorable parties I’ve experienced was at Coachella in 2006,” says Colette. “It was blazing hot-about 99 degrees-and there were 5,000 folks jamming in a tent. It was still daylight, making the experience even more intense because you could practically lock eyes with anyone in the crowd. The vibe in that room was so positive, it made me appreciate music on a completely new level.”
Dream gig: Coachella was intense, but if Colette could play anywhere in the world, she?d set up on the beach in Negril, Jamaica. “There is nothing like DJing outside,” she says, “and Jamaica is one of my favorite places to travel to.”
