Patient gets lungs after plane crash
A patient whose double lung transplant operation was stopped after a plane carrying donor organs crashed into Lake Michigan has received a second set of lungs, doctors announced Friday. The 50-year-old Michigan man, whose name wasn’t released, was in critical condition at a University of Michigan Health System hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Church couple pleads guilty
A couple who leads one of Brazil’s biggest evangelical churches pleaded guilty in Miami on Friday to smuggling tens of thousands of dollars into the U.S. in luggage, a backpack and a Bible. Estevam Hernandes Filho, 53, and Sonia Haddad Moraes Hernandes, 48, also are charged in Brazil with stealing millions of dollars from parishioners. They likely will be deported after their U.S. case is resolved.
Flight 93 box covered
The privately owned donation box that recently appeared at the temporary memorial for Flight 93 in Somerset County, Pa., has been covered up with a black bag by the National Park Service. Joanne Hanley, the Park Service superintendent in charge of the memorial, said the metal box could confuse visitors who want to donate to the permanent memorial, which is scheduled to open in 2011.
MySpace link to suspect?
He calls himself “Jack” and considers himself a “Sweet Troubled Soul” on his MySpace page. His interests include “eating small children and harming small animals.” The page appears to belong to Edwin R. Hall, the man accused of kidnapping and killing 18-year-old Kelsey Smith in Kansas. The Johnson County District Attorney’s office said Friday that Smith was strangled.

Hell to pay in the House
Has political discourse gone to hell? California state senators rushing to beat a legislative deadline Thursday took time out to debate whether the four-letter invective is too coarse for use on the House floor. During debate, Sen. Tom McClintock, a Republican, used the word repeatedly to register his objections. Sen. Carole Migden, a San Francisco Democrat, asked McClintock to apologize, saying she found the word “offensive.”
