Derek Jeter’s slow chopper just past the first-base side of the mound with the bases loaded scored Robinson Cano and lifted the Yankees to a 5-4 win over the Pirates in 10 innings for their fourth straight win. Cano’s leadoff double in the 10th started the rally.

The Nationals’ Dmitri Young continued his tear with three hits and three RBIs in an 8-5 victory over the Twins. Young had RBI singles in the third and sixth innings to go with a run-scoring fielder’s choice in the fourth. He is hitting .515 (35-for-68) over his last 20 games.

The Angels rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Cardinals 10-6 thanks to a six-run seventh inning against a beleaguered bullpen. The key hits included Casey Kotchman’s two-run single off Tyler Johnson and Mike Napoli’s two-run double off Ryan Franklin.

THREE DOWN

Former White Sox pitcher Freddy Garcia didn’t survive the second inning of the Phillies’ 8-4 loss to the Royals. He gave up homers to Mark Grudzielanek and Mike Sweeney in a 6-run second. Garcia’s ERA ballooned to 5.90 as he allowed seven hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings.

Center fielder B.J. Upton left the Devil Rays’ game against the Marlins with what appeared to be a left leg injury. He hurt himself while grounding out to shortstop in the top of the first. Upton is batting a team-best .320 with nine homers and 31 RBIs this season.

It was a rough night for the Tigers as they were shut out for the first time this year against the Mets. And manager Jim Leyland said before the game that he doesn’t expect fireballing reliever Joel Zumaya (finger) to return this season.
