If one team continues to defeat the other, some debate whether it’s even a rivalry.
U.S. OVER MEXICO
The United States has had the upper hand against Mexico, having lost only twice to its CONCACAF rival in 12 games. The domination is especially obvious on U.S. soil as the United States on Sunday improved to 8-0-1 in home games against Mexico. Still, the tension is at an all-time high.
PISTONS OVER BULLS
Before Michael Jordan added six championship rings to his jewelry collection, he and his Bulls teammates were knocked around (literally) by the Detroit Pistons. The “Bad Boy” Pistons eliminated the Bulls from the playoffs during the 1988, 1989 and 1990 seasons, with a combined series record of 12-6. PATRIOTS OVER COLTS
During the 2003 and 2004 seasons, the New England Patriots were 4-0 against the Indianapolis Colts, including two playoff victories over Peyton Manning and company. Adding salt to the Colts’ wounds was the fact that the Patriots won the Super Bowl in both of those seasons.
YANKEES OVER RED SOX
The Yankees appeared in five World Series between 1998 and 2003. The Red Sox appeared in none. The Yankees won three World Series titles during that time. The furthest the Red Sox made it in the playoffs was the ALCS in 1999 and 2003. The Red Sox lost both of those series to, you guessed it, the Yankees.
GATORS OVER VOLUNTEERS
Ex-Florida Gators coach Steve Spurrier once famously said, “You can’t spell Citrus without UT.” The dig was in reference to the Citrus Bowl, which the Tennessee Volunteers frequently played in after losing to the Gators. The Volunteers lost five straight games to the Gators in the mid 1990s.
REVOLUTION OVER FIRE
The Fire-New England Revolution rivalry has quickly become one of the best in Major League Soccer. Unfortunately for Fire fans, the results have been one-sided. The Revs have ended the Fire’s season four of the last five years, which includes a victory over the Fire in penalty kicks last season.
