Marathon running, if you want to do it right, isn’t cheap. Marathoners who spoke to RedEye said they literally can run through about three pairs of pricey shoes, to the tune of $80 to $140 a pair, in a year. Other marathon-related gear and accessories include energy gels that provide “portable hydration,” sweat-resistant running gear and GPS watches that track distances and also serve as heart monitors, according to David Dowd, a spokesman for Fleet Feet Sports, which specializes in these items.
Dowd provided RedEye with some of the gear a marathoner might need, along with average prices.
– Sports bra: $30-$40
– Socks: $5-$12
– Shorts: $25-$50
– Water bottle/hydration belt: $5-$40
– Energy gels: (gummy-like candy that melts into a gel) $1.25-$1.50 each
– GPS watch: (typically tracks heart rate and speed/distance) $40 to $350
– Bodyglide: (a deodorant-like stick that prevents runners from being chafed by their clothing) $5-$12
