GOLF: Tim Herron birdied three of his last four holes to take the lead at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee and Tim Clark matched him shot for shot until the 18th hole. Herron finished with a 65 and was at 12-under 198 for the tournament. Clark (66) and second-round leader Joe Ogilvie (69) were tied for second, one stroke back. . . . Maria Hjorth ended Meaghan Francella’s run in the HSBC Women’s World Match Play Championship, beating the local favorite 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals in New Rochelle, N.Y.

* TENNIS: Top-seeded Rafael Nadal beat Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 7-5 to reach the final of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany. Nadal will face Stanislas Wawrinka, who upset seventh-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-1.

* PAN AM GAMES: Brazilian Thiago Pereira broke the 40-year-old record of American star Mark Spitz with six swimming gold medals in one Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. On Saturday, Pereira won the 200-meter breaststroke to earn his sixth gold. He finished in 2 minutes 13.51 seconds. Spitz won five golds at the 1967 Pan Ams in Winnipeg. He was 17 at the time; Pereira is 21.

* AUTO RACING: Reed Sorenson earned his first victory in two years in the Busch Gateway 250 in St. Louis. Sorenson survived the race’s ninth and final caution with a strong restart to earn the victory.
