In his big-league debut, Ian Kennedy allowed just one earned run in seven innings as the Yankees beat the Devil Rays 9-6. Kennedy, a first-round draft pick out of USC last year, began at Class A and went 12-3 with a 1.91 ERA as he blazed through the minors.
Mike Pelfrey allowed one hit in six innings to lead the Mets to a 5-1 victory over the Braves, earning his first win of the season after seven losses. Pelfrey was thrust into a key pennant-race game after being recalled from Triple A. “I was just trying to do my best,” he said.
Bill Hall, who was hitless in his previous 14 at-bats over his last seven games, had a two-run double in a five-run second inning and drove in four runs as the Brewers whipped the Pirates 12-3. The versatile Hall hit just .185 in August as the Brewers fell out of first place.
THREE DOWN
Jack Cust had a miserable day as the Athletics designated hitter went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts and left five runners on base in a 6-1 loss to the Tigers. Representing the tying run in the seventh, he struck out looking with the bases loaded against Bobby Seay.
Devil Rays shortstop Josh Wilson made errors in three consecutive innings in a loss to the Yankees. He had a throwing error in the third, booted Jose Molina’s grounder in the fourth and dropped Josh Paul’s throw on Andy Phillips’ stolen-base attempt in the fifth.
The Mariners lost their eighth straight, falling 2-1 to the Blue Jays. Seattle has been outscored 49-25 during the slide. Reliever Sean Green isn’t too worried yet: “We’re playing good baseball. We’re just missing by a little bit each day.”
