Historic shocker knocks Michigan out of poll

Michigan, which opened the preseason at No. 5, dropped out of The Associated Press and USA Today coaches’ polls following its 34-32 loss Saturday to the Division I-AA Appalachian State Mountaineers. The Wolverines received 132 points to finish at No. 27 in the coaches poll. Michigan’s fall was the biggest drop in the AP poll since it expanded to 25 teams in 1989. Before this, Notre Dame had taken the biggest tumble — from No. 9 to 25 — after losing to Northwestern in 1995.
