After reading your article (“Your hand in gay marriage,” Aug. 30 “Boy on Boystown”), I was left wanting more.
I understand your frustration with the shortcomings — in name, if nothing else — of a civil union. However, I think it’s more important to open up the debate as to why lesbians and gay men are denied the basic civil liberties that are associated with marriage beyond the name itself. What about the more tangible legal rights that gay couples lack: to joint tax filing, to hospital visitation, to inheritance? Whether you call it a marriage or a civil union, the fact is that gay people are being indisputably denied basic civil rights.
