Wheaton Warrenville South seldom fizzles in the Pepsi Showdown. The two-time champion advanced to the semifinals of this season’s tournament by rallying for a 3-2 victory over Maine South on Saturday.
Eric Shrigley created the winning score when he was taken down in the penalty box while splitting two Hawks defenders. Scott Larsen converted the penalty kick with 12 minutes left.
“Going down 1-0 [at the half] made it tough for us,” Larsen said. “Our team has a lot of heart. We fought through it. This game proves how much heart, determination and will we have.”
Shrigley (10 goals) and Tim Litterio (three) also scored for the Tigers, who improved to 6-2. Kamil Laszczkowski (four) and Michael Pattullo (two) tallied for Maine South (7-1).
In other quarterfinal action:
*Sandburg’s Jeff Grotz hit the golden penalty kick to advance the Eagles (4-2) past Lyons (5-1) after a four-overtime 0-0 tie.
*Lincoln-Way Central (7-1-1) used goals from Phil Galounis, Dean Wern and Jason Obermeier in a six-minute span in the second half to eliminate Libertyville (3-1) 3-0.
*Warren’s Mike Osmera came off the bench to score 15 seconds into the second overtime to give the Blue Devils (4-4-2) a 3-2 victory over Plainfield Central. Senior Al Palar scored twice for Central (4-2).

Cross country
Lindsay Flannagan broke 18 minutes for the first time and led host Lake Park to the girls title of the 34th annual Lancer Invitational meet Saturday.
The junior ran the 3-mile course in 17 minutes 54.53 seconds to finish almost 18 seconds ahead of runner-up Annette White of Prospect.
Naperville North’s Kyle Gibson and Jon Newman finished 1-2 in boosting the Huskies to the boys title. Gibson’s time was 15:01.60, as North placed four of its runners in the top 10.
