Early childhood screenings for children ages 3 to 5 who are suspected of having a developmental delay that affects learning are being offered by Mt. Prospect-based River Trails School District 26. Screenings assess the child’s progress in speech and language, cognitive area, self-help skills, gross and fine motor skills, hearing and vision. Proof of district residency is required. A parent/child workshop by the Family Involvement Nurturing Development group will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Stevenson School, 1414 Armstrong Lane, Elk Grove Village. The workshop will include the story “The Apple Pie Tree” and making a miniature apple pie. The group is open to district families with children 5 and younger. The district is seeking adults to work with school-age children in its special education SPARK program from 7 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m. weekdays. Call Gloria Gryzik or Angie Marquez at 847-824-1065. Volunteers also are needed for the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring program at Central, South and Plainfield Schools. The Palatine High School Ecology Club will hold a fundraiser selling compact fluorescent light bulbs through Oct. 4. Bulbs can be purchased from students for $1.50 for a 15-watt bulb to $3.50 for a 3-bulb sample pack. Bulbs also will be sold during the Palatine farmers market Saturday. Ryan McCain, a student at the school, is holding the fundraiser as part of his winning Round 2 of the Red, White & Green Youth Action Campaign Grant in partnership with Lights for Learning, an education-based outreach and fundraising program. The Hersey High School Auto Show will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday in the school’s west parking lot, 1900 E. Thomas St., Arlington Heights. Prizes will be awarded.
