The Principles of Uncertainty

By Maira Kalman

Penguin, 325 pages, $29.95

“This is a year in my life profusely illustrated,” Maira Kalman writes — or rather, handprints — inside the jacket of this beguiling collection. “Abounding with anguish, confusion, bits of wisdom.” This melange of illustrations, photographs and observations from Kalman — her distinct style is easily recognized by even the most casual peruser of The New Yorker covers — is anything but sentimental. There is no real plot, no repeating character, yet the suspenseful pace continues to the last page, which, astonishingly, pulls out of the book and into the reader’s hands.
