Bernice A. Woods was born October 7, 1949 in Chicago, IL. Bernice was a graduate of Gary Roosevelt High School, class of 1967 and a graduate of Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, IL. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents Earl Sr. and Estella M. Woods.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three brothers, Earl Jr. (Marilyn) Woods of Sycamore, IL, Francis (S. Chanel), and Gordon Woods of Gary, IN; stepmother, Ida M. Woods of Gary, IN; she was the devoted aunt of Jeannine and Nicole Woods both of Chicago, IL, Earl Woods III of Atlanta, GA, Terishma Taylor and Odell (Ashara) Tate Sr. of Gary, IN; three great nephews and one great niece; special friends, Beaola Barber, Doretta Parker, Catherine and Terrie Hart.
Bernice A. Woods was a member of First AME Church in Gary, IN prior to moving to Chicago, IL where she joined Christ Universal Temple, 11901 South Ashland Ave. Bernice was employed at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, IL for 25 years.
At the time of her passing, Bernice was the Director of The Child Life Program for the Department of Pediatrics at University of The Illinois Hospital Medical Center, Chicago, IL. Because of her love for children, she was involved in several community-based organizations.
She served on the board of Directors of SCAVE (Sickle Cell Anemia Volunteer Enterprise 773-726-3875, Have a Heart for Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation (HAH) 773-291-2205, SCDA (Sickle Cell Disease Association of IL) 312-345-1100, Kid Power 312-224-7872 and Ryno Kid Care 708-358-0261 and numerous others.
Services will be held at Griffin Funeral Home, 3232 South King Dr., Chicago, IL on October 31st with Reception starting at 5:30 p.m. Memorial services at 7 p.m. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Gary, IN (Private Services). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to either of the above organizations in the name of Bernice A. Woods.
