Northwestern’s recent impressive pursuit of Chicago-area talent by coach Bill Carmody yielded two more recruits: Nick Fruendt, a high-scoring, 6-foot-5-inch guard/forward from Batavia, and 6-8 John Shurna of Glenbard West, who fills a need for a post player with scoring and rebounding ability. The two were AAU teammates with the Chicago Wolves.
DePaul: Blue Demons are expecting the signed letters of intent from two recruits in the next few days.
Jeremiah Kelly is the nation’s No. 15-ranked point guard, according to Scout.com, after successful seasons at Chicago’s Julian High and Boys to Men Academy. He is enrolled at American Christian School in Pennsylvania. He signed his letter Wednesday and planned to send it via express mail Thursday. Devin Hill, a 6-8 forward out of St. Luke’s School in Connecticut, was expected to sign Wednesday.
Notre Dame: The Irish didn’t welcome anyone from the Class of 2008 into the fold Wednesday. Nor will they for the rest of the early signing period.
Loyola: John Benkoske, a 6-9 center who led Oskhosh West to its second straight Wisconsin state championship last season, will join his former coach, Lance Randall, who is a first-year assistant at Loyola. Also returning signed letters of intent to Loyola coach Jim Whitesell were Walt Gibler, a 6-7 forward from St. Xavier in Cincinnati, and Jordan Hicks, a 6-6 guard from Rochester Mayo (Minn.). Point guard Courtney Stanley of Kennedy Kenrick Catholic in Norristown, Pa., has yet to submit his letter.
UIC: Illinois-Chicago coach Jimmy Collins didn’t announce any signings before Wednesday’s departure for the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam.
