President Bush was eager today to tell Americans about his new plan to assist financially strapped homeowners. After he did it, he gave them a way to find out more.

He said: “And I have a message for every homeowner worried about rising mortgage payments: The best you can do for your family is call 1-800-995-HOPE. That is, 1-800-995-H-O-P-E,” emphasizing it a second time.

Later from the White House came this email to reporters: “Correction to the President’s remarks: The toll-free number for the HOPE Now Hotline is 1-888-995-HOPE.”

Those who called the number the president suggested would have contacted the Freedom Christian Academy in Texas, which says on its web side that it is a school “both patriotic and Bible-based.”
