David N. Arseneault shattered the NCAA assists record when he had 34 in Grinnell College’s 151-112 win over North Central University of Minnesota in a Division III game Saturday.
The previous record of 26 was set in 1989 by Robert James of Division III Kean University. The Division I record of 22 was achieved by three players, including current Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson at Southern University in 1988.
Grinnell, in central Iowa, rotates five players in and out as often as possible, pressing the entire game and shooting more than 50 three-pointers.
*Freshman Austin Freeman scored 15 Sunday to lead No. 5 Georgetown to an 87-55 victory over Jacksonville. The host Hoyas, who shot a season-high 59 percent, improved to 7-0 for the first time since the 2003-04 season. … Aron Baynes was 9-for-9 from the field and scored 23 as No. 8 Washington State beat visiting Portland State 72-60. The Cougars (9-0) are off to their best start since the 1991-92 team opened 12-0. … Scottie Reynolds had 27 points and No. 25 Villanova (7-1) made it a record 13 straight wins in Philadelphia’s 52-year-old Big Five series with a 101-93 win over Temple.
*South Carolina football player Jordin Lindsey’s neck was slashed during an altercation near campus, police said. Lindsey was cut early Saturday by a man wielding a sharp object, possibly a broken bottle, a Columbia police report said.
