Of the nine ranked teams DePaul’s women have faced this season, Saturday’s opponent might be the most challenging.
As top-ranked Connecticut and freshman sensation Maya Moore roll into town for a 7 p.m. game at McGrath Arena, the Blue Demons find there just aren’t many weaknesses to exploit.
“Having coached Maya Moore with the under-19 gold-medal team last summer, she’s one of the most special athletes ever to play women’s basketball,” DePaul coach Doug Bruno said. “You’ve [also] got senior experience, and [sophomore center] Tina Charles is a bona fide All-American. There’s really not a weakness on this team.”
A limited number of tickets remained Friday for the Big East game, which will be televised locally on CLTV.
The Huskies (27-1, 13-1) are the first No. 1 women’s team to play at McGrath Arena. Moore, a 6-foot forward, averages 18.4 points and 7.1 rebounds for the season and has been Big East freshman of the week nine times this season. Charles averages 14.8 points a game.
The Blue Demons (18-9, 7-7) have had ups and downs since opening the season with a school-record 10-game winning streak. With two games to play, DePaul has earned a berth in the Big East tournament beginning March 8 in Hartford, Conn.
Saturday’s game is the home finale for seniors Allie Quigley, Erin Carney, Ciara Johnson, Missy Mitidiero and Caprice Smith.
