Buffalo wings and chili aside, it pays to look beyond U.S. borders for truly spicy food. Here are just a handful of our favorite spots to sample spicy global fare in Chicago.

Chinese

Lao Sze Chuan

2172 S. Archer Ave. 312-326-5040

The spiciest dishes at this Chinatown fave carry names such as Extremely Spicy Diced Fish Chong-Qing Style and Extremely Spicy Sole Fish Fillet Lai Feng Style. Consider yourself warned.

Ethiopian

Ras Dashen

5846 N. Broadway. 773-506-9601

Though we’ve recently fallen for the flavorful cuisine at Ethiopian newcomer Demera (4801 N. Broadway), this standby is still tops when it come to heat. For maximum burn, try the Misser Wat (a lentil dish) or Awaze Tibs (a beef dish).

Indian

Hema’s Kitchen

6406 N. Oakley Ave. 773-338-1627

Hema’s Kitchen II in Lincoln Park sometimes plays it safe, but the original location is happy to crank up the spice on request. (Just be careful what you ask for — you’ll get it.) If you can deal with the spotty service, the Lamb Vindaloo is a must-try for spice seekers.

Thai

TAC Quick Thai Kitchen

3930 N. Sheridan Rd. 773-327-5253

This tiny budget bet under the Sheridan Red Line “L” stop is high on authenticity, and the kitchen doesn’t skimp on spice. The Jungle Curry will have you squirming and sweating — and screaming for more.
