Tibet march on Michigan Ave.

More than 100 people marched down Michigan Avenue on Monday as part of a national effort to mark the 49th anniversary of a massive and historic protest against China’s rule of Tibet. The two-block-long line of protesters made up of Tibetans and supporters of the international movement to free Tibet of Chinese rule held life-size puppets of the 10 people who led the 1959 protest attended by about 300,000 people in Tibet against Chinese occupation.

Suspicious item closes streets

Traffic at a busy Northwest Side intersection was blocked Monday afternoon while crews responded to reports of a “suspicious item” near Schurz High School. Someone called police and reported the item shortly after 3:30 p.m. outside Schurz in the 3600 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, according to the Bomb and Arson Unit. Detectives were on the scene trying to determine if there was any danger. As a precaution, police closed the intersection of Addison and Milwaukee.

Teen slain in Lawndale

An 18-year-old man was fatally shot in the head over the weekend in Lawndale, police said. The victim, Channon Taylor, was shot Saturday in the 1800 block of South Lawndale Avenue, authorities said. Taylor of the 2100 block of South Millard Avenue was pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital at 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. No one was in custody. Harrison Area detectives were investigating.
