Clockers

By Richard Price

Picador, 611 pages, $16

Those of us who reluctantly closed the final pages of Richard Price’s new best seller, “Lush Life” (reviewed March 15 in Books), and mourn the close of HBO’s “The Wire” (for which Price was a writer) can find comfort — albeit chilling — in “Clockers,” his 1992 novel, set in the fictional town of Dempsy, N.J. Regardless of where Price sets his stories, he captures the worlds of homicide detectives and crack dealers and understands the grand sweep of urban life.
