A Downers Grove man accused of threatening to shoot up a county clerk’s office rather than pay a fine was in custody Friday in the DuPage County Jail.

Chester L. Price, 52, of the 4700 block of Roslyn Road, is accused of telling a collection agency by telephone that he was going to “shoot up” the DuPage County Circuit Court Clerk’s office, authorities said. He was arrested Thursday night and is charged with felony telephone harassment with the threat to kill and misdemeanor disorderly conduct, authorities said.

The collection agency, which works to recoup delinquent fines, contacted Price by telephone and, when no one answered, left a message.

Price eventually returned the call, saying he would not be paying and that he should go there with a gun and shoot up a few people, sheriff’s police said.

A $75,000 bail was set for Price, who has several drunken-driving convictions and a conviction for retail theft in DuPage County, according to court records.

If convicted of the most recent charges, he faces up to 3 years in prison.
