Friday’s results
DAVIDSON 82 GONZAGA 76
Stephen Curry scored 30 of his 40 points in the second half and hit the tie-breaking three-pointer with just over a minute left to lead the 10th-seeded Wildcats (27-6). Curry hit 8 of 10 threes for Davidson, which won its first NCAA game since Lefty Driesell coached in the 1960s. Freshman Steve Gray scored 21 for Gonzaga (25-8), which blew 11-point leads in both halves to make its second straight first-round exit.
GEORGETOWN 66 MD.-BALT. COUNTY 47
Roy Hibbert went over and around undersized UMBC, finishing with 13 points and leading the second-seeded Hoyas. Jonathan Wallace added 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting for the Hoyas (28-5), who shot 51 percent and held UMBC scoreless for a seven-minute stretch. Darryl Proctor scored 16 points for America East champ UMBC (24-9), which didn’t have a starter taller than 6-9 to defend the 7-2 Hibbert.
SIENA 83 VANDERBILT 62
Kenny Hasbrouck scored 30 points and Tay Fisher added 19 on 6-for-6 shooting on three-pointers as 13th-seeded Siena stunned Commodores. The Saints (23-10) never trailed, becoming the first MAAC team to reach second round since Manhattan in 2004. Siena had had been best-known for a first-round upset of Stanford in 1989 — a 14 seed over a No. 3. A.J. Ogilvy scored 18 for Vanderbilt (26-8), which got 13 from SEC player of the year Shan Foster.
VILLANOVA 75 CLEMSON 69
Scottie Reynolds scored 21 points and the Wildcats shot 82.8 percent (24-for-29) from the free-throw line as No. 12-seeded Villanova, one of the last teams to qualify for the tournament, advanced by rallying from a 39-27 halftime deficit. It marked the first time since the 1980s that Villanova (22-12) had participated in four straight NCAA events. Clemson (24-11) was the led by K.C. Rivers’ 15 points.

K-State looked fabulous in its 80-67 first-round upset of USC, showing it has more firepower than just talented forwards Michael Beasley and Bill Walker. The Wildcats have the talent for another upset here. But do they have the patience and maturity to win the kind of grind-it-out game Wisconsin likes to play? Bo Ryan’s team isn’t flashy–see its workmanlike 71-56 first-round victory over Cal State Fullerton. The boring ol’ Badgers just win 30 games every season.

The Running Rebels jumped all over overmatched Kent State 71-58 in the first round, but beating the Jayhawks, who breezed past Portland State 85-61 Thursday, figures to be another matter. Don’t expect Brandon Rush and Co. to wilt under the lights the way Kent did. Kansas also should be able to exploit the smaller Rebels in the paint with 6-9 Darrell Arthur and 6-8 Darnell Jackson. But if the Rebels want to run behind Wink Adams and Curtis Terry, the Jayhawks have the guards to beat them at that game too.
