The chairman of the University of Chicago’s Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations was named president of the American University in Beirut on Friday.
Peter Dorman is the great-great-grandson of Daniel Bliss, who founded the school in Lebanon, according to a statement by AUB.
“Having spent my childhood in Lebanon and much of my career in the Middle East, I have a strong appreciation of the tremendous impact AUB and its graduates have in the region,” Dorman said in the statement.
Dorman, who is a professor of Egyptology at the U. of C.’s Oriental Institute, is the author and editor of several books and articles on the study of ancient Egypt.
