Hi Clinton!
OK, the undying trend of shift dresses and muumuu-like tops (although all adorable) work only for sylphs! I can’t wear anything clingy because my midsection has a nice Pillsbury Doughboy quality to it at the moment. So if super loose and super tight styles are out, what is left for me? HELP! — JENNIE, 24, LINCOLN PARK
Hi Jennie,
Well, that makes two of us who have a midsection like the Pillsbury Doughboy these days (three if you count the Doughboy).
Girl, this winter was not kind to my abs. But enough about my problems. Let’s talk about yours.
You’re in luck, because one of the biggest trends for spring is the tunic. A tunic is neither super-tight nor super-loose — which is perfect for camouflaging a midsection without adding volume. Buy yourself about a dozen and wear ’em with jeans, khakis and walking shorts for the next six months.
I don’t love a tunic paired with a skirt. I’d much rather see you do an A-line skirt with a loose tank or a side-ruched wrap top and a jacket.
Which reminds me, and I’ve only said this about 5,000 times: The best way to camouflage a tummy is with a structured jacket. So, you could absolutely wear a shift dress — preferably something with an empire seam (right under your bust line) and an all-over print. Top it with a cute cotton canvas or denim jacket, and you’re good to go.
For evening, however, you’re going to be better off with a dress that has what I call three-part construction:
1. A distinct bust. A V-neck usually is the most flattering because it elongates the neck and therefore the body overall.
2. A distinct waistband. Look for one that’s higher than your own natural waist. This will take the emphasis away from the lower tummy, where most women with tum-tums carry their weight.
3. A skirt that flares away from the body. When a skirt comes away from the body around the knee area, it creates the illusion that your waist is smaller than it is.
I hope that helps!
Unlike you, I can’t wear a tunic or a dress, so I’m going to starve myself until beach season. … Right after I eat this tube of Pillsbury chocolate chip cookie dough.
