Following a child-custody hearing Tuesday, Britney Spears will be allowed to see her sons for longer periods, reflecting three months of relative calm for the pop star.

Kevin Federline’s lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, said the change is in “recognition of the progress that has been made, a progress in structure and stability,” according to The Associated Press. K-Fed retains custody of Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1.

Surrounded by lawyers and her parents, Spears smiled slightly and did not respond to questions as she left the hearing, which was closed to reporters and was less circus-like than past appearances.

“We are so pleased with Britney’s progress and we are very appreciative of the court’s recognition of this progress,” Spears’ parents, Jamie and Lynne, said in a statement.
