VOLUNTEERS
*Delnor’s OrthoKids needs volunteers to work with children with neurological and orthopedic conditions in an aquatic water class at the hospital’s Health and Wellness Center, 296 Randall Rd., Geneva. Volunteers help children with posture and stretching, strengthening activities, swimming and safety skills. All volunteers are supervised by a physical therapist or therapeutic specialist. Volunteers must be high school age or older. Classes are from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday from Monday to June 19. Orientation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday. Call 630-208-5510.
*A Spring Into Volunteering workday will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Spring Creek Reservoir Forest Preserve on Lake Street, a mile west of the North-South Tollway in Bloomingdale. Volunteers will remove litter and help with a brush-trimming project. Those under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian, and children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. FUNDRAISERS
*Guinness world record holder George Hood is trying to pedal into the Guinness Book of World Records during a seven-day, 135-hour charity fundraiser on behalf of the Heritage YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. The marathon is being held through Saturday at the Fry Family YMCA, 2120 W. 95th St., Naperville. The Strong Kids Campaign provides assistance to children who want to use the YMCA but do not have the financial resources. In July 2007, Hood set a Guinness record on the stationary spin bike of 111 hours, 11 minutes and 11 seconds. His goal is to raise $50,000. Visit www.RideGeorgeRide.org, or call 630-420-3411.
*Boy Scout Troop 14 will hold its annual fundraising spaghetti dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church of La Grange, 100 W. Cossitt Ave. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for children over 4. Children under 3 will be admitted for free.
*The Celiac Sprue Association of Greater Chicago will hold its seventh annual fundraiser walk, Feeling Better One Step at a Time, on May 17 in Fullersburg Woods on Spring Road in Oak Brook, one-half mile south of 31st Street. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. in the picnic area, and the walk will begin at 10 a.m. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition suffered by one in 133 people. The illness causes neurological, gastrointestinal and physiological symptoms, making it difficult for physicians to diagnose. A blood test is available to screen for the disease. Celiac disease can be life-threatening if left untreated. The only treatment is a gluten-free diet. *The Geneva History Center will hold a mystery dinner fundraiser, Dr. Ray and the Curse of the Golden King, from 6 to 10 p.m. May 16 at the Oscar Swan Country Inn, 1800 W. State St. The event is based on the life of Dr. George Whitfield Ray, who explored South America in the 1890s and early 1900s. Ray arrived in Geneva in the 1920s, where he lived until his death in 1953. The evening will include dinner, drinks and an auction. *Friends of the Wheaton Public Library will hold a Garden Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17 in the West Plaza of the library, 225 N. Cross St. Perennials from contributors’ gardens, gardening tools, pots and other items will be for sale. Garden experts from the Master Gardener program of the DuPage County Extension Service will answer gardening questions. All proceeds will benefit the library for such programs as the children’s summer reading program.
