The number of babies left at an anonymous baby “drop box” in southern Japan since it opened in May 2007. The Roman Catholic-run Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto created the so-called Stork’s Cradle after a series of high-profile cases in which newborns were abandoned in parks and at supermarkets. People can leave babies in an incubator via a small hatch located at the side of the hospital.
