The Tribune sports department lost a good friend and a loyal ally this week when George de Lama wrapped up a distinguished 30-year career at the paper. De Lama retires as managing editor for news — our boss — but he also traveled the world as a diplomatic correspondent, covered the White House, conceived and edited Pulitzer Prize-winning series … in short, he compiled as fascinating a resume as a working-class kid from Uptown could have imagined. And he never lost his Chicago sensibilities, which gave him a true appreciation of the city’s sports scene. Vaya con Dios, Jorge. All the best in whatever might be next for you.
