SEVERE WEATHER: A 5-year-old was killed when strong winds blew over a row of tents at a Huntsville, Ala., air show during storms that stretched across the South on Sunday, while severe weather caused airport delays in the East, officials said.
PLANE CRASHES: Authorities say five people are dead after a Cessna 206 crashed almost immediately after takeoff Sunday from a small airport in Santa Rosa, N.M. In Alabama, a sheriff said four people died after a twin-engine Beechcraft BE-55 crashed shortly after takeoff in Jasper, about 40 miles north of Birmingham.
FIRES RAGE: As more than 1,000 wildfires continued to burn in California, flames advanced toward more homes near Big Sur on Sunday, but firefighters made progress in protecting a Buddhist retreat in the Los Padres National Forest.
