The R&B star announced this week that he has rehired his mom as his manager after a much publicized professional split last year.
Of course, Usher isn’t the only celeb to keep family close to his financial concerns. Here’s a look at just a few stars in the news who haven’t let their careers fall too far from the family tree — and the pros and cons of working with the ‘rents.
Kim Kardashian
THE NEWS: Rumor has it the reality TV personality is in talks to be part of the as-yet-unannounced lineup for the new “Dancing With the Stars.” Fox News even suggests she might be up against her mom, Kris Jenner.
PRO: Mom already made her a star with “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” Will she do it again on the dancing show?
CON: Could be uncomfortable if Kim were to wind up behind bars like her sister did.
Ali Lohan
THE NEWS: Seeking a movie role, the “Living Lohan” personality accidentally auditioned for a porn director in an episode of her reality show that aired last month. Mom Dina Lohan reportedly was none too pleased when she found out.
PRO: Dina Lohan knows how to keep her kids in the spotlight — just ask Lindsay.
CON: Dina doesn’t know how to keep them out of it.
Usher
THE NEWS: The R&B singer rehired his mother, Jonnetta Patton, as his manager this week. The two had ended their professional relationship last year amid rumors that Patton didn’t get along with Usher’s now-wife, Tameka Foster.
PRO: She knows her stuff: Her team was in place for Usher’s “Confessions,” which sold 1.1 million copies in its first week of release in 2004.
CON: Gotta be awkward firing — and rehiring — your own mom.
Britney Spears
THE NEWS: Still under the conservatorship of her father, Spears stepped out with dad Jamie Spears to a Beverly Hills party Wednesday, E! Online reports.
PRO: Papa Spears seems to be guiding Brit toward a recovery after a very public meltdown.
CON: Who goes clubbing with her dad?
Miley Cyrus
THE NEWS: The daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus, she hosted the Teen Choice Awards, which aired Monday. She also confirmed to Seventeen magazine that she dated rocker Nick Jonas.
